American photographic history

The Library of Congress has put together an amazing collection of historical photographs and images on Flickr. And the best part is, because of the age they’re all copyright free, as far as I can tell.

Hulu just keeps getting better

Now that they’ve built up the quality of their service, increased their user base and launched their nation-wide ad campaign Hulu is enjoying a meteoric rise to the national technology stage that may only be rivaled by the likes of YouTube and more recently, Twitter.

What’s next in their assault on cable providers? A Hulu desktop application. The people asked for it, and now it’s available for downloading. This is going to make my future Mac Media Centre even sweeter than I had already planned. Airwolf has never looked sweeter.

Update: It took about 2 minutes to download and install. It runs exponentially faster than the website which is amazing. Downside, the required specs are a little high. So late-model computer owners will be bumming I’m sure.

How to write an enjoyable survey

The Deck advertising network has written an amusing and enjoyable survey that they’re asking their user base to fill out. I gladly obliged. You should too.

Welcome back

Although I had an amazing holiday weekend in Missouri, easily the worst part of the trip was traveling. From a cab driver trying to get cute with the route to the airport and nearly causing me to miss my plane, to flight reservation mistakes and flight change fees, bag check fees, added new flight costs, overbooked flights, plane delays, connecting flight delays and more. So after waiting in an extraordinary long line at the cab stand, to sit down in a cab, tell the driver where I need to go and hear, “Welcome home sir, it’s glad to have you back in New York. I hope you enjoyed your trip,” made my day.

I think that was the first time someone ever made me feel glad to be back home in New York.

Where YouTube videos go to die

Those little smarty-pants in the MIT Free Culture student group keep an eye on YouTube videos that are yanked for copyright claims and keep an online record of them.

Frank Lloyd Wright + Legos = Pure Awesomeness

I love Legos like I cannot describe. Not the ridiculous, commercialized pirate and Star Wars sets. I’m talking about the good ol’ police, fire station, gas station, boats and stuff. That’s the good stuff. But Lego has outdone themselves with the new Frank Lloyd Wright architecture sets.

I always thought The Weather Channel was a little bland. This site offers a more colorful version of the forecast.

Putting lipstick on a Detroit banking pig

Just as 2003 was not a popular time for cigarette makers due to swelling opposition to their products and increasing lawsuits, 2009 is not a popular time for automakers or banks. So one of the worst possible businesses to be in would be the banking arm of a Detroit automaker. Enter GMAC bank. The newest wolf in sheep’s clothing so-to-speak.

Today GMAC bank officially took a page out of the Altria playbook and has now rebranded themselves as Ally. I find it interesting that an institution that has recently rebranded themselves for what appears to be no other reason than to escape the image associated with their old brand would tout their honest, transparency and straight-talk.
