About

About me

Nate Tharp is a designer and front-end developer living in Brooklyn, New York, specializing in standards-based web design and development.

Professional Bio

Nate started building websites in 1996 when he was 14. His first professional job was a campus tour for a local seminary.

Upon graduation he started working full-time as an Art Director for Daniels Promotional Products managing their in-house art department and company website. He worked on branding and promotional projects for GE, Kraft Foods, Sysco, National Fruit and James Madison University.

After moving to New York City in 2004, Nate’s next stop was as a Senior Designer for a small SoHo-based graphic design firm, Eisenman Associates. At Eisenman Assicates Nate has designed annual reports and websites for numerous Fortune 1000 companies including PepsiCo, ITT Corporation, Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits, Maidenform, Land O’Lakes, Target, Sysco Foods, Kraft, Molson Coors, GE, Cargill and Curtiss-Wright. He also has a great deal of experience working on the websites and marketing materials for private companies in the financial services industry.

In addition to his work with Eisenman Associates, Nate takes on freelance web design and branding projects for small businesses and the film industry.

Nate also manages and occasionally contributes to the sports blog The Drubbing and created EatStreetMeat.com, a catalog of the New York City street vendors, and posts here at natetharp.com.

Personal Bio

Nate was born in Missouri, grew up in New Hampshire, went to college in Virginia and now lives in New York. In addition to traveling, he still enjoys playing basketball whenever possible.

Web standards

Web standards are a set of tools, not limitations. This much I know. With that in mind, this site is coded in accordance with the XHTML 1.0 Strict guidelines and complimented by the styling made available by CSS. Parts of this site may not fully validate as I attempt to reach forward to what’s been made available in HTML5 and CSS3, but the validators should be used as tools, not as an award of completion after all.

Browser support

This site has been built with accessibility and compatibility in mind, so the content of the site is made available to as many user agents as possible. However, certainly layout and presentation elements may not function perfectly in browsers that do not support the most modern techniques (read: anything not the newest versions of Safari and Firefox). Specifically, this website may not function well in Internet Explorer 6. If you have chosen Internet Explorer 6, or have had it forced upon you by your IT department, you may be prompted with an invitation to upgrade your browser upon visiting this site.

Content Management

This site is powered by the flexible and widely-used WordPress. It makes use of plenty of useful plugins as well as a hint of custom PHP, that I probably had a little help putting together.

RSS Feeds

This site’s content is made available through a litany of RSS feeds. If you wish to subscribe to all of the content or just certain pieces they can all be found at the top of the sidebar on the home page.

Typography

Currently this site is strongly lacking in the type department, but hopefully that will change as time permits. The wordmark is set in Edward Benguiat and Victor Caruso Bauhaus typeface from 1975. The headlines and body text are all set in Arial.

Tools

This site is created with only the finest machines in the world, Apple computers, and served by WordPress running on Linux, Apache, PHP and MySQL. XHTML and CSS are coded in Coda and the design work is done in Adobe Fireworks, with a dash of Adobe Illustrator every now and again.

Hosting

This site, along with the majority of my other projects, is hosted by the fine folks at DreamHost.
