Moderates

16 Jan

First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season. Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

Business Art

26 Sep

Business art is the step that comes after art. I started as a commercial artist, and I want to finish as a business artist. Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. During the hippie era people put down the idea of business. They’d say 'money is bad' and 'working is bad'. But making money is art, and working is art — and good business is the best art.

Wasted Wisdom

People say youth is wasted on the young. I disagree. I believe wisdom is wasted on the old. All you can do is part with it.

Anonymous Achievement

Achievement is often anonymous. Some of the greatest things have been done by people you have never heard of, quietly dedicating their lives to improving your own.

Crucible

6 Sep

Sooner or later, we all go through a crucible... Most believe there are two types of people who go in to a crucible; the ones who grow stronger from the experience and survive it, and the ones who die. But there is a third type. The ones who learn to love the fire and choose to stay in their crucible because its easier to embrace the pain when its all you know anymore.
