Pedestals are dangerous
19 Oct 2009
The art community put Shepard Fairey on a pedestal as a shining example of a single artist fighting against an oppressive and newly-far-reaching regime, the Associated Press. But as so often happens in cases like this, Fairey fell. Hard. And he let down all those, including myself, that defended him. Â Admitting he was wrong was the right thing to do. But it should’ve been done a long time ago.
On the positive side, a talented photographer, Mannie Garcia, will get the credit he deservers for taking the photo in question. The worst part of all of this is that this victory will lend some legitimacy, albeit false, to the AP and their destructive cause.
