Rolling over

Jason Fried at 37signals is not happy about Mint.com‘s sale to Intuit, and I can understand why. Jason elegantly elaborated on why it’s disappointing for the industry, but I was disappointed as a customer. I had grown to love and trust Mint and the service it provided. As soon as news of the sale came down my first reaction was “Crap, I should probably close my account.”
Money and finances are a extremely personal topics in our society, more personal than I think is healthy or productive. But for whatever reason I, and I’m sure many others, have a general distrust of the giant corporate institutions like Intuit that all too often disappoint their customers when it comes to trust, privacy and account information. I don’t pretend to know how this will play out for Mint.com and their users, but I’m having a hard time convincing myself that it isn’t all downhill from here.
